Our family lives in Mordialloc and we love being near the water; from the creek, to the beach, wetlands and very soon the new Mordi Aquatic Centre. My family has deep local history in the surrounding areas. I was born at the old Mordialloc Hospital, now the site of Better Health Network in Parkdale. My grandfather built the brick scout hall at GR Bricker Reserve (now a boxing gym), and my mum’s parents owned the newsagency and post shop in Highett. My husband’s family lived in Sorrento, where his grandfather was Victoria’s first police rescue helicopter pilot; famously rescuing those trapped on London Bridge when it collapsed in 1990. With grandparents who were midwives, nurses, small business owners and community builders, I am proud to carry forward their legacy of service.
Early in my career, I worked with Triple Zero (000) Victoria, dispatching ambulances, flights and medivac helicopters. Later, with the National Emergency Management Agency, I managed the National Warning System, sending geo-targeted emergency alerts during bushfires, floods, earthquakes and even international crises. Helping people in moments of need has always been a calling, and it’s shaped my leadership as a Councillor.
In addition to my role on Council, I’m Treasurer of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (ALGWA Vic) and an Organisational Development & Capability Consultant in the CBD. I also serve on Deakin University’s Business and Law Faculty HRM Advisory Board and Teaching & Learning Committee, and I’m completing my Master’s in HRM (Leadership).
Closer to home, I’ve been part of Kingston’s Access & Equity Committee, LGBTQIA+ Subcommittee, and Women in Civic Leadership Working Group. My husband and I volunteer at nippers, beach patrol, and school events, and our family loves supporting local businesses and enjoying the incredible markets and festivals across Mordialloc and Parkdale.
My vision for Melaleuca Ward is simple: a community where people are happy, healthy, connected and safe. I am passionate about ensuring access for all, supporting youth services, improving mental health pathways, and planning carefully for the changes brought by major infrastructure projects like the Level Crossing Removal. I feel honoured to represent the place where I was born and raised, and I’m dedicated to building a thriving, inclusive coastal community for generations to come.
Warm regards,
Councillor Tess Law
